Civil servants should limit Blackberry use to non-sensitive information

Information, Communication and Culture deputy minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said the government was aware of the risky security aspects of using the medium and that the information, which went through the Blackberry system, was recorded in servers overseas through encryption technique.

"We issued the advisory as a reminder as all communication systems have their weaknesses and could not guarantee full confidentiality.

"However, the high security level of information transfer and storage of Blackberry users does not allow it to be easily accessible to any parties," he told Dewan Negara yesterday.

He was replying to a query from Senator Ahmad Hussin on the lack of security in the Blackberry's data transfer which led to its being banned in France, United States Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Salang said the Information Communication and Culture Ministry was constantly monitoring Blackberry mobile phones to ensure security of users' information, particularly that related to the government.

He said it also held discussions with service provider Research in Motion (RIM) to ensure it maintained high information security level.
